BBC: BBC Two ha commissionato un nuova serie di  8-parti, The Last Kingdom, una co-produzione tra la Carnival Films e BBC America. La serie è un adattamento della serie best-seller di Bernard Cornwell  ‘The Saxon Stories’.   Ambientato nell'anno 872, quando molti dei regni di ciò che noi oggi conosciamo come l'Inghilterra sono caduti ai vichinghi invasori, con solo  il grande regno del Wessex , sotto il comando del re Alfredo il Grande. In questo contesto vive il nostro eroe, Uhtred.  Figlio di un nobile sassone, egli viene  rapito dai Vichinghi e cresciuto come uno di loro. Costretto a scegliere tra il suo paese di nascita e la gente che lo ha educato , Uhtred deve percorrere un sentiero pericoloso   cercando di riconquistare le sue terre . The Last Kingdom, realizzato da Carnival Films (Downton Abbey), è uno spettacolo pieno di gesta eroiche e battaglie epiche, ma con una profondità tematica che abbraccia la politica, la religione, la guerra, il coraggio, l'amore e la lealtà . La produzione di The Last Kingdom inizierà in autunno.  The Saxon Tales is a continuing historical novel series written by the historical novelist Bernard Cornwell about 9th and 10th century Britain. The protagonist of the series is Uhtred Ragnarson, sometimes known as Uhtred Uhtredson and Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Uhtred is born in Northumbria, but captured and adopted by the Danes. The story takes place during the Danish invasions of Britain, when all but one of the English kingdoms is conquered. The name of the protagonist comes from the historical Uhtred of Bebbanburg; Cornwell is descended from this long ago family. The historical story centers on the emergence of England as a nation on the island of Britain from the vision and actions of Alfred, later historically dubbed 'the Great'. King Alfred of Wessex reluctantly accepts that he cannot drive the invaders from the island, after his defeat at Wilton, and is forced to make peace with them.
